Standard 3 · Lesson 1

Moses’ Childhood

Reading Portion

Exo.1:22; 2:1-10

Lesson Content

1. Amram and Jochebed of the family of Levi lived under the bondage of Pharaoh in Egypt (Exo.6:20; 2:1).

2. In those days Pharaoh had commanded that all the male children born to the Hebrews should be killed as soon as they were born (Exo.1:22).

3. When Moses was born, his mother saw that he was a goodly child and hid him for three months (Exo.2:2).

4. When she could no longer hide him, she took an ark of bulrushes, daubed it with slime and pitch, put the child in it and laid the ark in the flags by the brink of the river (Exo. 2:3).

5. His sister Miriam stood afar off to see what would happen to her younger brother (Exo.2:4; I Chron 6:3).

6. Pharaoh’s daughter came down to bathe in the river, and seeing the ark among the flags she sent her maids to fetch it. She opened it, and saw the child and had compassion on him and said that it was one of the Hebrews’ children (Exo.2:5,6).

7. Miriam said to her, “Shall I go and call to thee a nurse of the Hebrew women that she may nurse the child for thee?” She then brought the child’s own mother (Exo.2:7,8).

8. Pharoah’s daughter gave the child to its own mother that she might nurse it for her. Moses grew up with his mother, and when he was weaned, she took him to Pharaoh’s daughter (Exo. 2:9,10).

9. Pharaoh’s daughter called him ‘Moses’, saying, “Because I drew him out of the water.” Moses became the son of Pharoah’s daughter (Exo. 2:10).
