Standard 5 · Lesson 2

Joshua and the Gibeonites

Reading Portion

Josh.9:1-23

Lesson Content

1. Joshua led the Israelites, who were the people of God, into Canaan.

2. The Gibeonites heard of what Joshua did to Jericho and Ai. They devised a wily plan and went to Joshua to the camp at Gilgal (Josh.9:3-6).

3. The explanation given by the Gibeonites about themselves (Josh.9:6-13).

4. Joshua was deceived by this and made a league with the Gibeonites without asking the Lord’s counsel (Josh.9:14,15).

5. Later they heard that Gibeonites were their neighbours (Josh.9:16).

6. The Israelites did not kill them because of their oath but made them hewers of wood and drawers of water for the house of God (Josh.9:18-23,27).

Moral

We should always seek the counsel of God before venturing into any new plan.

Memory Verse

“Oh that my people had hearkened unto me, and Israel had walked in my ways! I should soon have subdued their enemies, and turned my hand against their adversaries.”
