Standard 9 · Lesson 17

Triune God (Part II)

Lesson Content

8. God the Father, and the Son are not one and the same person:

(i) “My meat is to do t he will of him that sent me” (Jn.4:34). Here ‘my’ and ‘him that sent me’ cannot be the same person. (ii) If Jesus Himself were the Father, then Jesus saying “... thou lovedst me before the foundation of the world” (Jn.17:24) would become meaningless. (iii) If Jesus and the Father were not two persons then Jesus crying out “My God, my God why hast thou forsaken me?” (Matt. 27:46) will be meaningless.

9. The Son and the Holy Spirit are not one and the same person:

(i) “If I [Jesus] go not away the Comforter [Holy Spirit] will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you” (Jn.16:7). (ii) The Holy Spirit descended upon him as a dove (Matt. 3:16). (iii) “And whosoever speaketh a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him; but whosoever speaketh against the Holy Ghost, it shall not be forgiven him, neither in this world, neither in the world to come” (Matt.12:32). (iv) Jesus said “Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth is come, he will guide you into all truth” (Jn.16:13).

10. The Father and the Holy Spirit are not one and the same person:

(a) He [Father] shall give you another Comforter... Even the Spirit of truth” (Jn.14:16, 17).

(b) “The Lord God [Father] and his Spirit hath sent me” (Isa.48:16).

(c) “Having received of the Father the promise of the Holy Ghost he hath shed forth this” (Acts 2:33). There are many other verses too which may be quoted to prove that God is Triune.

Moral

God has chosen man in Christ Jesus before the foundation of the world that he should be holy and without blame before Him in love — To fulfil this purpose in him, the God of love revealed Himself as the Father of love, the Son of love and the Holy Spirit of love. Therefore, man should be wholly sanctified in his spirit, soul and body and be preserved blameless unto the coming of the Lord Jesus Christ.

Memory Verse

“For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one. That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me. The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Ghost, be with you all. Amen.”

I John 5:7; John 17:21; II Corinthians 13:14.
